Operation Warm Serves Over 36,000 Texas Children in Need

This year, the Pennsylvania-based nonprofit has gifted brand-new coats and shoes to over 36,000 children in need across Texas.

Operation Warm is a national nonprofit that manufactures its own line of high-quality coats and athletic-style shoes for children in need. This year, the Pennsylvania-based nonprofit has gifted brand-new coats and shoes to over 36,000 children in need across Texas.

In the last year, 155,000 Texas children have applied for coats and shoes via the nonprofits' online Wish List - over 50% of all those requests come from Houston. In response to the demand, Operation Warm has raised $550,000 in funding from private sources this year, including corporations, individuals, nonprofits, and foundations. Despite this remarkable effort, 59,000 children are still waiting for coats, and 43,000 are waiting for shoes.

"A new pair of shoes or [coat] would mean that a student does not have to decide 'should I go to work with my parent today to help the family or should I go get my education?' Students this young are having to sacrifice their future for basic needs," wrote a 2022 Wish List applicant from Dallas, TX.

"Over the past year, we've seen Wish List demand in Texas skyrocket," said Grace Sica, Executive Director at Operation Warm. "That trend tells us organizations that serve children in need are looking to prepare themselves for winter storms, and ensure they're ready to support families if the unexpected happens."
